Previous Release: Coast Guard coordinates rescue of 3 people east of Bermuda

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Crewmembers aboard the Wellington Star work to rescue three people from a disabled French sailing yacht just after midnight Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, about 600 nautical miles east northeast of Bermuda.

Fifth District search and rescue coordinators in Portsmouth were able to guide the Wellington Star to the scene since the ship participates in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System. AMVER ships broadcast their position so that rescue coordinators can divert the best-suited ship or ships to respond.

An Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130J Hercules aircraft crew flew to the scene to locate the yacht and to provide communications and support for the rescue.
