NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Coast Guard personnel and other safety experts addressed local fishing industry vessel owners and operators Thursday in Newport News at a stability and safety at sea seminar.
Presenters explained the science behind vessel stability and discussed the importance of safety before giving some demonstrations. They deployed a life raft, simulated vessel stability concepts with a floating model boat, gave immersion suit training and discussed the best use and care of electronic position indicating radio beacons (distress satellite beacons.)
Capt. John Little, deputy commander of Sector Hampton Roads, gave the opening remarks before the presentations were made by personnel from the Coast Guard, Chesapeake Marine Training Institute, Vane Brothers Safety, USA Services and a naval architect and marine cosultant.
