Coast Guard coordinates rescue of 2 off Bells Island, N.C.

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. - Coast Guard watchstanders coordinated the rescue of two boaters from Bells Island, approximately one half mile east of Marshallberg, N.C., after their 14-foot boat fell apart and sank Wednesday night.

A friend of the missing boaters contacted Sector North Carolina watchstanders and reported they were overdue, since they left from Marshallberg en route to Jarrett's Bay with no lights, electronics, or lifejackets onboard.

It was reported that after battling the rough seas and high winds the boat began to fall apart and sink. They swam to Bells Island and waited.

Their friend informed the Coast Guard of a fire coming from Bells Island; which he believed to be his friends trying to signal someone.

The watchstanders directed a Marine Corps Cherry Point rescue helicopter crew to Bells Island, and broadcasted a urgent notice to mariners. The helicopter crew assisted a Good Samaritan in helping the two individuals back to the Marshallberg dock.

"Both individuals swam for an hour before making landfall at Bells Island," said Petty Officer 1st class Jason Frivance, one of the watchstanders at Sector North Carolina. "The two men were found in good condition."
