Coast Guard responds to drifting barge off Sandbridge, Va.

572-foot barge drifts off Virginia Beach

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard is responding Friday to a 572-foot barge that broke free from a tug offshore at approximately midnight Thursday on its way from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to New Jersey. The tug is up against the beach off Little Island Park in Sandbridge, Va., and crews have not been able to recover the barge due to the continued severe weather. The Hampton Roads area has experienced severe weather from the remnants of a hurricane in the gulf including 70 m.p.h. wind gusts, high tides and flooding. Currently the barge is drifting toward a fishing pier. (U.S. Coast Guard video)
