Coast Guard medevacs CGC Northland crewmember

CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. - The Coast Guard medevaced a 22-year-old Coast Guardsman from the cutter 115 miles south of Cape Hatteras Saturday morning.

The crew of the Northland contacted Coast Guard 5th District watchstanders in Portsmouth, Va., at 8:07 a.m. requesting the medevac due to the crewmember suffering severe back and abdominal pain and nausea.

In a conference call with the Coast Guard flight surgeon, the health services specialist on the ship, and watchstanders, the flight surgeon recommended medevac to the nearest hospital.

An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew and a C-130J Hercules airplane crew from Air Station Elizabeth City launched to assist.

The helicopter arrived on scene and transported the ailing crewmember to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth for treatment at approximately 12 p.m.

The Coast Guard Cutter Northland, a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter, left its homeport in Portsmouth Friday en route to patrol the Caribbean Sea.
