News Release
PHILADELPHIA - Media are invited to Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia at 1 Washington Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa., from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009, to interview Coast Guard members on boating and swimming safety. If you would like to attend please contact Lt. j.g. Jodie Knox at (215) 271-4501 or (215) 778-5454.
Labor Day marks the unofficial end to the boating and swimming season, but the Coast Guard reminds people to be smart and safe when on or near the water over the holiday weekend.
The Coast Guard urges boaters to complete a boating safety course, obtain a free vessel safety check, not operate a boat under the influence and always wear a life jacket.
The Coast Guard urges people to be careful when they are near the water, including rivers and streams, as well the ocean. Those who are weak swimmers or non-swimmers are urged to wear a life jacket even if they do not plan on entering the water.
If heading to the ocean, swimmers are urged to always swim with a buddy, swim at a beach where lifeguards are present and do not swim in rough water.
