Missing 12-year-old found off N.C. coast

COROLLA, N.C. - The Coast Guard was notified by Currituck Emergency Management coordinators that the missing 12-year-old child was found deceased this morning in Duck, N.C., three-quarter mile from the original search location.

The boy's mother called 911 Friday morning reporting her son was boogy boarding on the ocean side of Corolla, and she lost sight of him after he went under the water.

She watched the boogy board wash ashore without her son.

A Coast Guard rescue boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet, two rescue helicopter crews from Air Station Elizabeth City, crews from Ocean Rescue, Corrola Fire and Sheriff's Department and Lifeguards aided in the search.

"The family will remain in our thoughts. It is imperative that the public continue to watch the weather and marine reports when swimming or boating," said Craig Sanders, operations unit coordinator at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina.
