Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship passenger

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard medevaced an 84-year-old cruise ship passenger off Cape Henry, Va., early Sunday morning.

A crewmember of the 917-foot cruise ship Grandeur of The Seas contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads at 12:39 a.m. stating they had a passenger experiencing abdominal pains who required medical attention.

According to Senior Chief Petty Officer Brian Avelsgard, command duty officer for the Fifth Coast Guard District, watchstanders contacted the Coast Guard flight surgeon who recommended medevac by helicopter.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., arrived on scene and transported the man to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment.
