Coast Guard, Marines medevac man from fishing boat in Pamlico Sound

HOBUCKEN, N.C. - A Coast Guard rescue boat crew from Station Hobucken and a Marine Corps rescue helicopter crew medevaced a man suffering from chest pains while sailing on a fishing vessel in the southern Pamlico Sound Tuesday.

The crew of the fishing vessel Gallant Fox notified watchstanders at the station at 11:58 a.m. that their 57-year-old crewmember was experiencing chest pains and numbness.

A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City helicopter crew was already en route to assist with a dive accident near Ocracoke, so Coast Guard Sector North Carolina requested assistance from a Marine Corps rescue helicopter crew from the air station at Cherry Point.

The rescue boat crew arrived on scene at 12:21 p.m. and transported the man to Station Hobucken where the Marine Corps helicopter crew was waiting. The helicopter crew transported the man to Craven Hospital in New Bern, N.C.

The crew member was reported to be in good condition when he was transferred to the helicopter and emergency room, according to Chief Petty Officer Max Stel, the command duty officer at Sector North Carolina.
