Coast Guard places Francis Scott Key buoy

Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin places Francis Scott Key buoy

The Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin lowers the Francis Scott Key buoy down to its location in the Patapsco River Friday, May 8, 2009. The Rankin is responsible for the annual placing of the buoy in the spring and for removing it in the fall. The buoy was first placed in the river in 1914, marking the location where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star-Spangled Banner. It has been placed in this location annually since the 1970's. Park rangers and volunteers from Fort McHenry were on board the Rankin to tell the story of the Battle of Baltimore.
