Coast Guard, partner agencies to hold mass rescue operation exercise in Delaware Bay

PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard, federal, state and local agencies as well as industry and private stakeholders are scheduled to hold a mass rescue operation, full-scale exercise to establish processes and procedures to prevent, mitigate and respond to a passenger vessel emergency in the Delaware Bay Wednesday.

WHO: Coast Guard, federal, state and local agencies as well as industry and private stakeholders.

WHAT: The exercise will test the effectiveness of response efforts from the Coast Guard and partner agencies during a mass rescue operation under realistic conditions.

WHEN: Sept. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: Coast Guard Training Center, 1 Munro Ave., Cape May, N.J.

WHY: The exercise is designed to simulate an emergency aboard a passenger vessel or a mass rescue operation, which may overwhelm normal search and rescue capabilities. The exercise aims to ensure a coordinated strategy is in place for an effective outcome.

Media interested in attending contact Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment Atlantic City, N.J., at 609-677-2204 by 3 p.m., Tuesday.

Media will be escorted throughout the exercise site for safety and to conduct interviews and gain access to the operational drill beginning at 1 p.m.
